Convert UK bank statement PDFs to a Xero CSV
Clients without a bank feed, a feed that started late, or a new client bringing a year of PDFs: UK practices still end up with statements that have to go into Xero by hand. Xero’s PDF statement conversion is limited to the US and Canada, so in the UK you need a CSV.
What Carrytick does with a UK-style statement
- Reads the common column layouts: separate Paid out / Paid in, Money out / Money in or Debit / Credit columns, or one signed Amount column, with a running Balance.
- Understands UK formatting: £ and GBP amounts, 1,234.56 numbers, balances marked CR or DR, and dates like 03/03/2026 or 03 Mar 2026.
- Skips the noise: sort code and account number lines, “Page 2 of 3” and “continued” lines, and balance brought forward / carried forward lines are not turned into transactions.
- Checks every row against the running balance the bank printed, and the opening plus transactions against the closing balance.
- Writes the Xero file: Date, Amount, Payee, Description, Reference, with dd/mm/yyyy dates and a single signed amount.
What it doesn’t do
- It doesn’t read scanned or photographed statements (no OCR). Download the PDF from online banking instead.
- It isn’t tuned to any particular bank. It reads the table on the page, so an unusual layout may need checking, and the balance check tells you when a row doesn’t add up.
- It doesn’t connect to Xero. You import the CSV yourself with Import a Statement.
Several months at once
Drop a run of monthly statements for the same account. Carrytick checks that each month’s opening balance matches the previous closing balance and flags gaps, overlaps, missing pages and statements from a different account. See how the completeness check works.
Try it on a real statement. Free, no sign-up, nothing uploaded. Free downloads include the first 15 rows; the Firm plan exports every row.
